A mix of both Traditional Signwritten and Graphic work coming through Al Scott Signs this month.
Hand painted lettering just works on older vehicles, as that's how it would have been done originally. For the newer vans it's all about the design I think... this is where you get to stand out from the rest!... and it really doesn't have to cost the earth.

Early on this year i was left an answer message on my phone ( yep, as a lot of people will testify I’m the bloody worst at picking up my calls when on-site )
To my surprise it was the BBC, who were at that moment in time, making an episode of DIY SOS here in my home city of Leicester called 'Independence for Isla'
Anyway, long story short...
Truly honoured to be asked as a local Signwriter and Sign Painter to contribute and be a small part of the surprise for little Isla and her family!
Isla was born with  a rare genetic disorder, mandibuloacral dysplasia, which makes her bones dangerously brittle and causes her major organs to age prematurely.
My small part ( in what was a massive local come together )  was a Hand Painted and Gilded wooden Sign. Painted in Isla's favourite colours and with the family words 'Be Safe, I Love You'.( The Family had always had this message above the entrance door so it was read when leaving the house )
I hope the Sign gives the family lots of joy and a big thank you to Gordon, and the rest of team at BBC for the shout out to contribute.
Incredible job done by tons of Local businesses and people who gave up their time to get the transformation and surprise done in such a short space of time.... amazing job!!!
The Leicester episode of DIY SOS is now on Iplayer and was aired last night, filmed originally back in February this year.

Back to Paul Pender & Sons to Hand Paint a few more Classic Trucks.
Had the privilege of doing quite a few classic vehicles for 'Pender's' over the years, as well as the odd wall sign or 3 🙂
Paul Pender & Sons are very well known around Leicestershire, being one of the largest and well respected Funeral Directors in the City.

Lovely people, and his collection of Classic Vehicles is a joy to behold ( and work on! )

All these were done using traditional methods and materials - hand painted onsite.

A large part of my work is the annual updating and maintaining of various Honours Boards around the Country.  It's one of those jobs that's incredibly rewarding, seeing all the past names and dates written by generations of Traditional Signwriter's who have had the privilege of adding to these historic boards. Most are either Gold Leaf or Painted, and nearly all I do are hand painted, using Traditional Signwriting methods.

Cool to see one of my Hand-painted signs at Glastonbury this year - A big, big thanks to Hen, Jack and all at Roaming Giraffe Events for the project!

A nice mix of jobs over the last few weeks, always keeps you on your toes being a signwriter, very rarely the same thing twice!
From modern Van Sign writing to a very large wooden hand painted sign... oh and a bit of classic 'brush for hire, up a ladder' work for a local design agency at the Edgbaston grounds in Birmingham.

Had the joy to hand paint the signage for Leicester's newest, and arguably Brightest, Gallery in the city centre. The Gallery is a showcase for the colourful, abstract artwork of Sally Ann Dyer, a local Leicester resident seeking to give something back to her community.
Fascia and windows all hand painted in bright enamels using Signwriter's Traditional Colours and Techniques.

Been a busy bee of late, so a bit behind on my updates...
And this recently completed project being one of those reasons.

The Hope Bell Memorial Project

The Hope Bell is a clock chime installation, recently completed by John Taylor & Co Bell Foundry and is installed in Queens Park, in the centre of Loughborough in Leicestershire.

Had the honour of working again with the cool guys at John Taylor & Co Bell Foundry on a job that used...er, just a tiny bit of Gold Leaf!

The 23.5ct 'Distressed Finish' Gold Leaf covered metal scrollwork reads a Poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, titled  ‘Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep’

The bells will form a lasting memorial to residents who died in the Covid19 outbreak, and remember all those public servants who put themselves at risk dealing with the pandemic.

....As I mentioned, an absolute honour to be a part of this Memorial, and a big thank you to all involved, especially Nathan who was indispensable on this one!

This time of year, as is the same for a lot of Traditional Signwriters out there... is the time for updating Honours Boards. As i've mentioned before, its always a joy to revisit these after yet another year and to look over some of old work undertaken by the Signwriters of the past who painted ( or gilded ) before me. Some of the work goes back  generations and no one single signwriter is the same... every single one is unique it their own way. Long may the traditional art of hand painted signwriting and gilding continue as it would be such a shame to see this historic craft be forgotten.
