A few pics from a recently finished project and small part of the large restoration project saving  the Historic Taylor's Bell-foundry in Loughborough.
Lovely honour to be asked to do the Signwriting on this one as its such an iconic local place and also the last of its kind in Britain today. Bells from this place have made there way all over the globe including those in St Paul's Cathedral.
There was one original old wall sign still existing, so that was used as the 'master' design to follow for all the new painted signs on the brickwork outside. The Signwriting on the large wooden doors at the entrance to the works is based on an an old black and white photo in the Museum's Archives.
Lovely job to do! and even kept out of the rain ( mostly! 😉)

Busy few weeks here at the studio and out and about in Leicestershire. Lot more traditional work this month but still with the odd local business van or two thrown into the mix :)
Few select photos below, including one very large hand painted sign for the lovely people at The Roaming Giraffe events and a nice War Memorial addition with very small lettering ( 7mm to be precise!  )  and lastly... a Coat of Arms painted onto a metal shield that will become part of a large iron gate for a local Rectory.

Been a bit of a gap since the last post, but as usual... busy, busy so going to post a few recent works in one go ... as a 'catch up of sorts!

Artysan Fayre - Hand-painted silver lettering direct to facia in sunny Kibworth Beauchamp, leicestershire.

Smiths Property Experts - I've done a few of these now, very precise lettering and colours but enjoyable to do - love how crisp these turn out. This one is their new office in Quorn, Leicester.

'The Mouse House' - what a great name!... nice house name hand painted in flat black direct to the door frame in Loughborough.

The Flower Plant - Small sign done for the nice people at The Flower Plant in Sileby - Flat white painted lettering onto a wooden sign.

This stunning Vintage Bus is a Burlingham Seagull 1952 - AEC Regal IV.
Being asked to hand paint vintage vehicles like this is always an honour. These would have all been traditionally sign written back in the day, and its great to see them restored to their former glory.
The design for this was taken from what little photographic evidence remains and was hand drawn to custom fit the rear doors and miss the locks and handles.
The colours were matched to the original panels and was all hand painted onsite over a couple of days.
A big thanks to Sharpes Of Nottingham for the welcome and letting me do my thing!

Honoured to be asked to restore a very well known village sign in the stunning leicestershire countryside. The village of Horninghold lies seven miles north-east of Market Harborough and four miles south-west of Uppingham. The sign was in a bit of a worn state with most of the coat of arms artwork missing and the lettering  patchy and completely missing in some places.
Fully restained, varnished and signwritten. The Crest has also been repainted on both sides.
Now back in its rightful place in the centre of the village green.

Honours Board updating time of year again, and theres been quite a few over the last few weeks so not much new posts on here. Lots to do! some painted, some gilded ... even the odd one or two that are vinyl nowadays! Always enjoy this time of year revisiting boards that have been worked on for years by past Signwriters and myself.
Not going to flood this page with photos of boards, but heres a couple of recent ones :-)

And a bit of freehand Signwriting done down in Barrow Upon Soar for Homefield College and their new Salon which is soon to open on the High St.

Hot, hot hot...Bloody 'ell its hot! :-)
Been early starts this week to get this one underway, but always really enjoyable to get out very early with the paint brushes.
Bit more to come on this, but the majority is sorted.
Big thanks to Sam for letting me loose on their newly painted premises, and Jo and Kate for the help on-site.
All the work on this one is hand painted, various paints used but a shout out to Sabre-paints and Wrights of Lymm for the majority of them.
Nest are a well known and respected Leicester based artisan gift shop that have a loyal local based clientele as well as a worldwide presence, also being one of the major stockists of Jellycat of London... this new premises is situated at the VERY sunny Stoughton Grange in Leicestershire.

So great to be asked back to renovate yet another 'Ghost Sign' in the town where i grew up, Market Harborough.
This one is smaller than the Freeman Hardy & Willis sign that i did a few years ago, but maybe more recognisable for some of the original Harboro residents, as it used to be one of the best fish and chip shops around in its day. Taylors was famous for being the second oldest fish and chip shop in the world and was even recommended by Egon Ronay and featured in the Relais Routiers Guide.
As a Signwriter by trade i'm often asked what my thoughts are on the renovation of Ghost Signs. On one hand i do love the old decayed beauty of these signs ( i really do! ), but on the other hand, if they are just left to decay then eventually there will be no sign to see at all.
The process i try to stick by with any job like this is to keep the renovations as near as possible to the original,  lettering shapes and colours traced and sampled from what is left of the original sign. Re- signwrite with no imbelishments, or alterations to the original design... just a to be as true to the original as possible is the key.

The restoration and gold leaf of memorial plaques like this one are always an honour to do and a poignant reminder to myself of the sacrifice given in the past by these brave men and women.
The lettering on this one was orginally white I believe, but had just about disappeared over the years... this time around its been freshened up with a fitting antique gold. Stands out a treat now.
The plaque sits on the outside of Leicester's Memorial Holbrook Hall, next to St Guthlac's Church in Knighton. All the work was traditionally hand done with brush and the trusty old Mahl stick :-)
